Gangotri is the source of the holy River Ganga (Ganges) and the second stop of the Chardham Yatra. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander, in the early 18th century. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha performed penance here to bring the Ganga down from heaven to earth, to wash away the sins of his ancestors.
The temple sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi River (the name of the Ganga before it meets the Alaknanda at Devprayag). The actual source of the river is the Gangotri Glacier at Gomukh, 19 km further up, which is accessible only by a challenging trek.
A natural Shivling submerged in the river near the temple is visible in winter when the water level recedes. According to legend, Lord Shiva received the Ganga in his matted locks here to break her fall from heaven. The temple is made of white granite and stands at 3,100 meters altitude.

Unlike Yamunotri and Kedarnath, Gangotri Temple is directly accessible by road — no trek is required. Buses and taxis go right up to the temple entrance. This makes Gangotri the easiest dham to visit for elderly pilgrims and those with mobility concerns.
