Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the third stop of the Chardham Yatra. The temple, built of massive stone slabs, stands at 3,583 meters on the head of the Mandakini River. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva here to absolve themselves of the sin of killing their kinsmen in the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva, unwilling to forgive them, took the form of a bull and hid underground. The hump of the bull is worshipped at Kedarnath.
The temple is believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas and was later restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. The present structure is over 1,000 years old. The temple miraculously survived the devastating 2013 flash floods with only minor damage, while the surrounding town was completely destroyed — a fact that reinforced the temple's spiritual significance.
Behind the temple is the Bhairavnath Temple, which must be visited after Kedarnath darshan. According to tradition, Bhairavnath protects the dham during winter when the temple is closed. The idol of Lord Shiva is moved to Ukhimath's Omkareshwar Temple during winter months.

From Gaurikund, a 16 km trek ascends to Kedarnath Temple. Walking time is 6-8 hours uphill and 4-5 hours downhill. The path is paved but steep, with altitude gain from 1,982 m (Gaurikund) to 3,583 m (Kedarnath).
Ponies, palkis, and dandis are available at Gaurikund for pilgrims who cannot walk. There are tea stalls and resting points at Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, and Linchauli along the way.
Helicopter shuttles operate from Phata, Sirsi, and Guptkashi helipads. Flight time is 7-8 minutes each way. Book 60+ days ahead for peak season. Weather (VFR conditions) may cause cancellations � always have a backup plan.
From Hyderabad, the practical route is to fly or take a train to Haridwar/Dehradun, then cover the 240 km onward leg to Kedarnath (8-9 hours to Gaurikund).
