Yamunotri Dham Temple, Uttarkashi Uttarakhand — Chardham Yatra from Hyderabad
Sacred Origin

Significance of Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri is the source of the holy River Yamuna and the first stop of the Chardham Yatra. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal in the 19th century. According to Hindu mythology, the Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (the Sun God) and sister of Yama (the God of Death). A dip in the waters of the Yamuna is believed to cleanse sins and protect against untimely death.

The actual source of the river is a frozen lake and glacier (Champasar Glacier) at an altitude of 4,421 meters, about 1 km further up from the temple. Most pilgrims visit the temple rather than trekking to the glacier, which requires mountaineering experience.

The temple houses a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna. Nearby is Surya Kund, a hot water spring where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in cloth bags as prasad. Divya Shila, a sacred stone pillar, is worshipped before entering the main temple.

Ponies, palkis, and dandis (palanquins carried by porters) are available for pilgrims who cannot walk the trail. Helicopter service is not available for Yamunotri (only Kedarnath has helicopter shuttle).
